Visit with us the ancient military and commercial port of
Rome.
According to tradition, Ostia was founded by the fourth King
of Rome, Ancus Marcius, around 620 B.C. The name Ostia comes
from the Latin word "ostium" which means "river
mouth".
This trading town, which expanded around a fortified camp
(castrum), was located near the mouth of the river Tiber which
flows out into the Tyrrhenian sea. An expert guide will explain
to you the ins and outs of this very important town, where
all kinds of merchandise from the far corners of the empire
were traded to supply Rome.
Imagine! even pre-fabricated marble coffins were imported
by ship from the eastern provinces.
During this half day tour
we will visit Ostia Antica and the museum of roman ships.
If
you book the full day tour
we will visit Ostia Antica, the museum of roman ships and
the archaeological site close to the huge octagonal harbour
(Portus) built by Trajan (AD 98-117) when the port built by
Claudius had silted up.
